Craig Stephen Barnes unexpectedly entered his heavenly home on Friday, January 6, 2023 at the age of 69. Born on April 1st, 1953 in Covington, KY, Craig was the oldest child of a large and beautiful family in Northern Kentucky. Craig was always known for his humor and, although he had many accomplishments to his name, he always joked about being "C-average" in school. The irony is that Craig was brilliant, taking an innovative, creative, and passionate approach to his career (and everything in his life). A graduate of Holmes High School and Northern Kentucky University, Craig spent early parts of his career as a producer of syndicated television including the Bob Braun Show, before entering into business for himself, owning and operating an advertising and marketing agency for almost 30 years. In his "second act," Craig took his decades of knowledge to mentor other small business owners as part of Agency Management Institute (AMI). The light of Craig's life was his family and friends. He married Kelly Anne Yelton, whom he lovingly called his "beautiful bride" for 38 years, on September 8, 1984. Kelly and Craig had two children. He was an incredible father figure-not only to his children but to their partners, friends, nieces, nephews, and many more he pulled into his extended family. Craig was the best "Pop" to his 3 grandchildren, schooling them early in the importance of laughter, cooking, family, and unconditional love. To know Craig was to love Craig. He was generous in every way: generous with his time, his love, his possessions, his talents. A one-time purveyor of bolo ties and ponytails and a perpetual rocker of a mustache, Craig taught those in his life the true meaning of family. He had lifelong friends. He filled his home with music, beautiful décor, great food, and plentiful libations. Nothing made him happier than his dining room table filled with loved ones eating food he cooked in his kitchen. Craig was a cancer survivor, an "amateur" chef, an avid fan of St. Louis baseball and hockey, and purveyor of fine wine and bourbon whiskey. Like Frank Sinatra, Craig should be remembered "as a man who had a wonderful time living life, a man who had good friends, and fine family". Craig was preceded in death by his parents: Barbara and Bill Barnes, a sister: Kimberly Evans Murphy, and a nephew: Ryan Bick. Craig is survived by his wife: Kelly Yelton Barnes; his beloved children: Taylor (Ashley) Barnes-Gilbert and Connor (Corinne) Barnes, a brother: Kevin (Martha) Barnes, two sisters: Betsy (Michael) Duncan and Barbie Barnes, and his three beautiful grandchildren who were the light of his life: Lucy, Kieran, and Harper. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Pam (Joe) Bick and Stacy Yelton, as well as seven nieces and nephews who adored him, and five amazing great-nieces and nephews. Public Visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2022 from 10:00 AM until the Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, 11 East Southern Avenue, Covington (Latonia), Kentucky 41015. Entombment: Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright, Kentucky. The family requests no flowers be sent. Memorials in Craig's honor may be made to: Siteman Cancer Center online at siteman.wustl.edu/tribute or via mail at 7425 Forsyth Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63105. Please indicate memorial designation for "Head and Neck Cancer." Online condolences may be expressed on Facebook or at www.connleybrothersfuneralhome.com

I was so shocked and saddened to hear the news. My most heartfelt condolences to the Barnes family and AMI community. Craig was a true mentor to me. I valued his insight, support, kindness and gift of time. He was always willing to listen, talk and provide much needed advice and friendship. I am going to miss him greatly.

While I hadn't yet met Craig in person, I was a member of his AMI Group and got to know him through it and emailing back and forth over the past year. His love for his family and mentoring business owner came through in everything he said and did. His passing leaves a huge hole in the world and for all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Elizabeth Merwin - Jan 13, 2023
I met Craig for the first time a few months ago in Denver at an AMI workshop. I really enjoyed how he worked with the team and shared his knowledge. We sat next to each other at dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about non-business life. He was a warm, witty and caring man. I am so sorry for your loss of Craig and my thoughts are with your family.
Megan Reeg - Jan 12, 2023
I am forever blessed to have had Craig as my first boss out of college. He taught me so much; not just about the marketing and advertising industry, but how to live a good life. He always took the scenic route through Forest Park on his morning commute. He loved sharing stories over a drink and cooking meals for his loved ones. He was quick to forgive - and laugh good-naturedly - when I made mistakes. He was smart and kind and generous and wickedly funny and the best mentor and father figure I could ever have. My deepest condolences to Kelly, Taylor, Connor, their spouses and children. He was truly the best.
Kace - Jan 10, 2023
We got to know Craig through his work with AMI and found him to be a great mentor, advisor, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
Karley Cunningham - Jan 10, 2023
I had the pleasure of meeting Craig at the 2022 AMI Build A Better Agency Conference. While our meeting and brief words we shared were only fleeting, I was witness to the AMI Community's adoration and appreciation of him. Many times I saw him across the room, engaged in deep conversation, making folks smile and laugh. It so clear, even from a distance, how genuine and deeply caring he was. Many times since I have heard his name and learned about the difference he made for folks in the community. Barnes family and friends, I share this message so you can see just how far the ripple effect of Craig's actions and dedication stretch in the world. I'm certain that his brilliance will continue to shine on through all of the energy, care and commitment he dedicated to the AMI Community. I'm deeply sorry for your loss.
Matthew Strunk - Jan 10, 2023
I’ve known Craig for nearly 6 years and met him through AMI. I had started an agency and knew very little so I signed Craig on as my coach. To say he’s made an impact in my life would be an understatement, his guidance and tough love helped us grow our company into something very special. His kindness was apparent and he seemed to generally care about us. My family’s life is drastically different and I feel confident that Craig was a big contributing factor. Please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss and please know that he was loved by many!
Patrick McCullough - Jan 10, 2023
We are devastated to hear of Craig's untimely passing. My dad and I knew Craig from AMI, where he provided us consult, guidance, and genuine interest and concern for eight years. Craig could always be counted on for his insight, conviction, and support in facing any challenge at hand––he was always eager to help improve our business. Along with that, he steadfastly expressed his pride in and love for his family and each of their accomplishments in life. Craig was a great guy who we all will miss dearly, and we are all better for having been influenced by his zest for life.
Sandy and Bill Kerlin - Jan 10, 2023
Craig was our neighbor many years ago on Wallace Avenue. We enjoyed many great conversations over food and drinks. Later when I came to know Kim I always enjoyed hearing about what Craig was up too. He was the dearest man and such a good neighbor. May his love of family and his embracing love comfort you in your grief. I have put the Barnes family on the prayer list at church. 🙏🙏

Katy Boos - Jan 9, 2023
Craig was my mentor, my confidante, my cheerleader and my friend. In 2020 when everything shut down, Craig guided me through the hardest work year of my life. He even sent a magnet to me that says "We can do hard things." A perfect reminder that I could - thanks to Craig's support. To his family, you already know (and the number of heartfelt condolences here clearly show it) that Craig left a lasting impact on those of us in AMI. But most of all, Craig loved his family beyond measure and talked about you often. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
Martha Marchesi - Jan 9, 2023

Elaine Ralls - Jan 9, 2023
I am so addened to hear this news. Craig was one of a kind. I met him in AMI over 20 years ago, and even though I'm not active he and I stayed in touch. I celebrated with awe when he went to chef school and respected how he never stopped moving forward, learning new things, even when he faced challenges that would take others down. Quick to celebrate others, Craig impacted everyone he met...focusing on making sure others were in the place of most potential. God blessed us with Craig's lasting legacy. Prayers to all for peace and understanding. He'll always be with us.
Mike Morse - Jan 9, 2023

Adam Moreau - Jan 9, 2023
I only met Craig for the first time just a few months ago. One of my very first days at my new job at an ad agency, I travelled to learn from him at an AMI session in Denver. I was immediately touched by his honesty, depth of knowledge, and warm personality. I was so excited to see him again in April to let him know how my journey in the agency world has been since we last spoke. Even though I only knew him for a couple of days, I couldn't wait to talk to him again. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Craig will be missed.
Julianne McCollum - Jan 9, 2023
Craig was such a generous, kind soul and all of us in his virtual peer group from AMI will miss him terribly. We were so gutted to hear the news and wanted to make sure the family knew how many lives he has touched - not just personally through coaching but also he made us better leaders and helped us grow our businesses so he indirectly touched all of those lives too! Much love to the family for healing.
Kimberly Hulett - Jan 9, 2023
I am at a loss for words and am deeply saddened by your loss and the loss to all those Craig touched. I only got to know Craig this past year through his mentoring with AMI. I am better as an individual and my business is better due to Craig's mentoring even for this short amount of time. Craig not only taught me things about business, but he also met we where my life was personally and provided perspective, encouragement and ways to ensure both were fulfilled. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. I think a piece of him will live on in those he touched. He will be missed! Sending strength and comfort!

I\'m very sorry to hear this news. Craig was a great mentor to me personally and to our agency. He had really great room tone - always made people feel comfortable to share warts and all, free from judgment, and was always generous with support and guidance. He definitely helped make me a better manager and helped put HelpGood on a great path forward. My condolences to his family and friends and to the rest of the AMI agency leads who I\'m confident will continue to be influenced by Craig long into the future.
Anji Willenborg - Jan 9, 2023
My deepest sympathies to Barnes family. Craig was an incredible mentor and teacher and all-around wonderful man. I’ll cherish the things he’s taught me. He was kind, thoughtful, funny, patient, and wise. He could get to the heart of any problem and would help you figure it out. He always started our calls by sharing beautiful stories of his family and cared to ask about mine too. He did so much to help our agency, and I will miss his phone calls and words of advice. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family and friends. I will miss you, Craig. May your memories live on in the lives you’ve touched.

Craig was one of the most authentic, generous and kind people I have ever met. I had the honor to know him for over 20 years and there is no question, his impact on me and those who knew him was significant. Craig's love for his wife and family was apparent in everything he did. Thankfully for me, his family extended to his friends at AMI who loved him like a brother. My thoughts and prayers are with you Kelly, Conor, Taylor and your entire family.
Doug Kauffman - Jan 9, 2023
Craig was an all around incredible man. It was nothing short of a pleasure to work with him over the past several years and while Craig clearly enjoyed the work he did it was the conversations about his family where I remember he would really light up. It was clear his family was his first priority and meant the world to him. Craig will be dearly missed and I pray peace that surpasses understanding for the family in this time of sorrow.

I'm so saddened by the news of Craig's passing and my heart hurts for his family. While we only met in person once at my first AMI meeting last fall and virtually through several calls, I felt an immediate warmth from him. We bonded over bourbon at dinner and he asked all about my family and children. A genuine good soul with great advice - for marketing AND for living life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by the AMI community and everyone he knew.

Melinda Byerley - Jan 9, 2023
To Kelly and Craig's family and closest friends: Craig was my business coach and was incredible at it. I got to meet him at the BABA summit last spring and we were at Drew's table together. But when I was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer, I was profoundly lucky to see the big heart inside. He immediately sent me a magnet that is still on my fridge, like the one his wife kelly had given him when he was diagnosed: "We can do hard things." And when I feared for the worst for myself and my business, Craig showed me with his own experience that I would survive. We were texting pretty regularly after his surgery this fall, up until Christmas. This comes as such a shock and a loss, and I can't imagine the sadness from those who knew him best. He was a gentleman, and a good man. I will miss him profoundly. May his memory, in time, be a comfort to you all.
Tim Lindner - Jan 9, 2023
Craig was a wonderful business mentor and friend. I was lucky enough to meet him several times in addition to seeing him virtually every month. He will be greatly missed but will leave behind good memories and wisdom.

I will be forever changed because of you. Thank you for being so amazing and always taking time out for me. I’m thinking of your wonderful family that you spoke about every chance you got. I’ll miss sharing baby stories with you.
Laura Pierson - Jan 9, 2023
My heart just hurts with learning of Craig's passing. He was a great mentor to me as I was stepping into a larger role, not to mention the help he provided with some of our clients. He was always there to talk through a problem and give us an unbiased perspective. To his family and all who loved him, my deepest condolences.
Alex Wells - Jan 9, 2023
I did not ever get to meet Craig personally, but I did communicate with him through AMI a few times and was always charmed by his kind personality. I know he was a special part of the AMI team. My prayers and condolences go out to his family and colleagues.
Lori Cronin - Jan 9, 2023
I've gotten to know the wonderful Barnes family over the last decade through my dearest friend Taylor. I absolutely loved hearing Taylor tell stories about her dad. His love of cooking, the trip he took to Italy, and his ability to quote National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, among many, many other memories. I have had the pleasure of spending time, though limited, with Taylor's parents over the years and I quickly began looking to them as a guide for a love that can last a lifetime. Their relationship gave me hope that lifelong love is still possible. Craig always seemed like the coolest dad around, and he will be sorely missed by anyone who ever met him. My deepest sympathies to my sweet Tay, Ash, and Lucy. To Tay's beloved brother Connor and his family. And to Kelly, thank you for sharing your soulmate with the world and inspiring others to love. To Liz and Kathleen, I know how important Craig was to you after the loss of your mother, I'm so, so sorry. I hope he is reunited with Kim. Tay always said they were best friends. I love you all so much. My heart aches for you. Anything you ever need, please reach out to the Cronin family. All our love. Josh, Lori, Jack, and Caleb

I met Craig during my sophomore year of school. And I can rightfully say he was my first high school crush. After graduation we went our separate ways only to find out later through FB we had been living within an hour of each in Missouri for years. To his family who he loved deeply... “May your happy memories give you peace and comfort during this challenging time.”
